APPLY HERE

Nowadays it is common to be invited for an online virtual job interview. One of the most popular online interviews is the video call interview. Hence this article highlights the important tips to consider when preparing for such an interview. Usually, the organization sends the applicant an e-mail with the details such as the date and time of the interview as well as the electronic link invitation to the interview.

The organization also specifies the video conferencing application program that they’ll be using. It is important that you download the application and install all the necessary software and hardware days ahead of the interview. Test your hardware which includes a microphone, speakers, and Internet bandwidth and stability. In an online interview, you speak with the interviewer in real time and see each other’s faces like in an in-person interview.

You may also be requested to make a power-point presentation online. Therefore for a successful online interview, you need to make the necessary preparations ahead of time.

Consider carrying out a mock online interview with a friend to test all your equipment. You might consider using earphones rather than your computer speakers to get a clearer sound.

Learn to use the video application software and know where to turn your microphone on or off as well as how to share your screen in case you’re required to do a presentation.

Use proper lighting and background

It is advisable to choose a room and location that makes a good professional impression. You will need a comfortable chair and table. Make sure there is enough light such that you can see yourself clearly on the video through your computer’s camera.

If possible stay away from overhead lights during the interview and face towards the window with your face in the light. Some video call programs have the option to put a background photograph. You are not encouraged to use those backgrounds but rather put a plain background in your room.

Print relevant documents

In most interviews, you will be asked some questions that may need you to describe a certain situation or a certain process. For example, some may ask you to describe a situation where you encountered a problem and how you solved it. To be well prepared for this you may help yourself by printing a summary of all the relevant talking points including your CV and job description.

Dress professionally

Even though you are attending the interview from your home, you still need to look presentable and professional. You can wear a formal to semi-formal outfit depending on the position and company involved.

Be prepared for technical glitches

It is always a good idea to have a backup plan for things like power or internet outages. However, sometimes technical glitches cannot be avoided and may be beyond your control. In such cases, contact your interviewer and make them aware of your challenges and option B if you have any. You may also request that they move the interview to a later date. Communication is key.

Establish and maintain eye contact

Instead of focusing your eyes on the person on the screen, you need to focus on the camera. When having a video call we have a tendency to focus on the person on the screen and this gives the impression that we are looking down instead of at the interviewer.

When staring directly into the camera, it gives the interviewers the impression that we are making eye contact with them. You must maintain eye contact throughout the whole meeting.

Remove distractions

Silence anything that might interrupt your interview for example screen pop-ups and notifications on your computer. Make sure there is no one else in the room when having your interview to avoid unnecessary background noise and movements. You wouldn’t want your interviewers to see a cat running across the screen during an interview or hear children playing in the background.

Log on early and test your setup

Always be punctual and log in at least 20 to 30 minutes ahead. This gives you ample time to make sure all is set and ready. Make sure everything works including your microphone, speakers, and internet and then you can relax until about 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time.
